The goal of early childhood literacy coaching is to support the implementation of evidence-based, intentional literacy instruction in the pre-kindergarten classroom.

Literacy coaching begins with developing a relationship and partnership with the teacher. Collaboratively, the coach and teacher reflect on recent reading research and current classroom instructional practices. The teacher then chooses the changes needed to achieve best practices. Changes may include enhancing literacy-rich classroom environments and developing strategies to support children's growth in oral language, print awareness, alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness skills.

The literacy coach may support the teacher by facilitating observations of best practice classrooms, providing professional development, modeling demonstration lessons and engaging in feedback discussions with the teacher. Data from developmentally appropriate child assessment is the confirming information that supports the classroom changes made by the teacher.
